Anna Paquin Biography

Anna Paquin rocket to stardom when she was an 11-year-old child after her impressive performance in the independent film The Piano. She is one of the most remarkable talents that Hollywood has ever had. Anna is the youngest child of Brian and Mary Paquin and was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on July 24, 1982. Her full name is Anna Helene Paquin. Her mother was a native of New Zealand and the family moved there when Anna was four.
Anna received her early education and part of her secondary education in New Zealand.

The rest of her high school studies were done in a school in Los Angeles, which she attended when her parents divorced and her mother moves to the United States. During her youth, Anna had many hobbies such as playing the cello, viola, and piano. She also enjoyed gymnastics, ballet, swimming, and downhill skiing. As a child, Anna had no intention of becoming an actress and the only dramatic part she ever played was as a skunk in a school production. It was a wonderful fluke that she became an actress.

While attending the audition for the movie The Piano with her sister, she caught the eye of the casting directors and was asked to do a reading. They saw something very special in this nine-year-old and cast her as Flora, the daughter of a mute woman. Over 5,000 other hopefuls had tried out for the part. During the film, Anna delivers a mature and moving performance as Flora, who often speaks for her silent mother.

The movie was a box office success and Anna Paquin, at the age of 11, was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar in 1994. To the surprise of many who attend the Academy Awards, Anna won. She is the second youngest actress to win an Academy Award after Tatum O’Neal in Paper Moon in 1973. Anna is the first Canadian-born actress to win a Best Supporting Actress Oscar. After the movie, Anna and her family didn’t plan to have her pursue an acting career. Anna kept receiving offers for new roles but kept refusing them.

In 1996, Anna did accept an offer to play the role of Jane Eyre in the movie by the same name. She proves that winning the Oscar was not a fluke and slowly began to build her acting career, only doing interesting characters, instead of high profile projects. During the same year, Anna plays the role of a young girl who helps to raise a flock of Canada Geese in the children’s drama Fly Away Home.

While in Canada shooting the film, Anna made five television commercials for a telephone company in her former hometown of Winnipeg. In 1997, in the film Amistad, Anna earns an impressive cameo as Isabella, Queen of Spain. In time, Anna made the transition from a child actress to a more mature one with her performances in Hurlybudy (1998), A Walk on the Moon (1999), the popular science fiction film X-Men (2000), Almost Famous (2000), and Finding Forrester (2000).

In 2007, Anna took the role of Elaine Goodale in Bury My Heart at Wound Knee for HBO. She plays the role of a real-life poet and Indian Rights Advocate who had married a Sioux doctor, play by another Canadian, Adam Beach. Anna continues to make movies but has also lent her talent for acting in Off-Broadway plays.
