Sum 41 Biography

Sum 41 Biography

Sun 41 is a Canadian rock band that began in Ajax, Ontario. Its current members are Deryck Whibley (lead vocalist, guitarist, keyboardist), Jason McCaslin (bass guitarist, backing vocalist), and Steve Jocz (drums). Other members have come and gone on to play with other bands. In 1999, the Sun 41 group signed an international Level record deal with Island Records. Their music has been labeled by various critics as pop-punk. punk rock, and even skate punk. Today, critics consider Sum 41 as an alternative rock band. The band’s later music became known for its politically-driven lyrics.

Sum 41 has released five studio albums, one live album, two live DVDs and more than 15 singles. They have sold over ten million albums worldwide. Since 2006, the band has performed more than 300 times and has become famous for its long and global tours that often last for longer than a year. Sum 41 has also been involved with the charity group War Child Canada. In 2004, the group helped in the making of a documentary covering the effects of war in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

During the filming, fighting and gunfire broke out all around them and the crew and the band barely escaped unharmed. A United Nations peacekeeper, Chuck Pelletier, called for armored carriers to take people out of the hot zone and to safety. The band named their next album “Chuck” to honor Pelletier for helping them. This album went Platinum in Canada and Gold in the United States. The documentary called, “War Child,” was released on DVD in 2005 in Canada and the United States.

The members of Sum 41 began their music careers in rival bands during high school. Deryck Jason Whibley was born on March 21, 1980, in Scarborough, Ontario. He was raised by his single teenage mother Michelle Whibley. At the age of 12, Deryck and his mother moved to Ajax, Ontario. During high school, Deryck was involved with several bands before he met Steve Joe. Deryck and Steve became good friends and began a band called Kasper. Later the name was changed to Sum 41 for a supernova show. Jason McCaslin joined the group in 1999.

Deryck has also developed a strong professional career in the music industry as a producer and manager. In January 2004, Deryck began dating Avril Lavigne, who is also a Canadian rocker. They became engaged on June 27, 2005, during a trip to Venice, Italy. Deryck and Avril were married in a traditional Catholic ceremony on July 15, 2006, at a private estate in Montecito, California.

They currently live in Bel Air, Los Angeles, California Jason Paul McCaslan was born on September 3, 1980, in Toronto, Ontario. Jason began playing bass at the age of 14 and belonged to a grunge garage band called Second Opinion. Jason was given the nickname “Cone” by Deryck Whibley in high school because he often ate ice cream cones at lunch. Unfortunately, Jason no longer eats ice cream as he has become lactose intolerant.

Although he seems to be the quietest member, he is the most visible of the band members to its fans, often speaking to the public and answering questions on the band’s official website. Steve Jocz was born on July 23, 1981, in Ajax, Ontario. He attended high school in Ajax along with Jason and Deryck. Steve has the nickname Stevo 32 and is the youngest member of the band. He is also considered the most fun-loving member. Steve has an older sister named Jen.

They were raised by religious, conservative parents. Steve does not share the same beliefs and political views of his parents. He has adopted a vegan diet in his lifestyle and lives in an apartment in Toronto. Sum 41 continues to make music, and tours throughout the world, making their fans happy.
